Solid Bowl Centrifuge Technology

Flottweg

Fundamental Principle

         Separation processes that were labor-intensive and used energy inefficiently were replaced in recent years by more economic liquids-solids separations methods utilizing centrifugal force. Industry demands have increased for systems that are continuous, compact and enclosed while offering versatility, high performance and low maintenance.

The Flottweg range of solid bowl scroll centrifuges meets these requirements for most applications. Solid bowl centrifuges operate on the principle of sedimenta- tion, i.e. solid particles heavier than liquid settle out within a given period of time. Centrifugal force accelerates the solid particles, thus speeding up the settlement process. The same principle applies to the separa tion of two immiscible liquids with different specific gravities.

Depending on the machine type and size, the centrifu gal force can be increased to up to ten thousand times the natural gravity force.

The characteristic feature of Flottweg solid bowl cen trifuges is their adaptability to a wide range of differ- ent separation applications. Consequently, it has been ensured that the main operating parameters such as

  • bowl
  • differential speed between bowl and scroll
  • pond depth
    can be adjusted easily.

While the bowl speed governs the speed of sedimenta tion and dewatering, the differential speed directly influences the solids removal and thereby the solids throughput, the solids residence time and the depth of solids in the bowl. These factors in turn have a direct influence on the quantity of recovered solids discharged as "cake", their dryness and the clarifying capacity of the centrifuge.

For this reason, all Flottweg centrifuges are available in a variety of bowl and differential speed control devices.

Range of Applications

        Flottweg solid bowl centrifuges are used in virtually all industrial processes for the following applications:

  • Dewatering
  • Clarification
  • Separation
  • Classification
  • Sorting
    of
  • Suspensions with crystalline, granular and fibrous particles of 1 micron to 5 mm size;
  • Sludges and slurries with amorphous particles of 5 micron or less (Flocculants may have to be added);
  • Mixtures of two immiscible liquids of different specific gravities and a solid phase;
  • Mixture of two solids of different densities with a liquid to aid in their separation.
