Harvard: Vegetarians, Elderly Need Enough Vitamin B12 |
US : Vegans (people who do not eat any meat, dairy, or eggs) are more prone to developing a B12 deficiency, as most reliable sources are from animal-derived product. However, consuming eggs and dairy products meet less than half the adult recommended dietary allowance of 2.4 mcg of B12, a report by the Harvard Health Letter.
Also, up to 30 percent of percent of people ages 50 and over suffer from atrophic gastritis, a thinning of the stomach lining, which reduces the amount of B12 absorbed by the small intestine. Certain other digestive conditions and surgeries also can interfere with B12 absorption. |
Vegetarians and older people with atrophic gastritis are advised to take a multivitamin, eating fortified breakfast cereal, or both to counter the problems.
A deficiency of vitamin B12 may affect balance, memory, and perhaps mood. Sometimes, the only symptoms of a B12 deficiency are subtle cognitive and neurological changes, says the report.
More serious shortages can result in dementia or anemia. Breast-fed infants of mothers with a B12 deficiency are at risk for severe developmental abnormalities and irreversible neurological damage, it adds.

Fruit juice is a drink that is good for health of all ages and sexes. Drinking fruit juice, especially freshly squeezed from fruits, will fully get wholesomeness from vitamins. However, due to the hurriedly living style of city people, it makes several people turn to ready-to-drink fruit juice. Now, it comes to decision making – how to select the best fruit juices laid down in the markets. Here are some choosing guidelines when purchasing fruit juices. |
- Select fruit juice made from 100% fruit juice and gone through the pasteurizing process. This is better than concentrated fruit juice. The way to identify whether it is pasteurized fruit juice or not is that the product must be refrigerated and its shelf life is short.
- Genuine fruit juice is not clear like fruit juice made from concentrated fruit juice after it is poured in a glass and stay for a while.
- Should not select fruit juice labeled as “Fruit Drink, Fruit Punch or Fruit Blend” because it contains very little amount of real fruit juice.
- Price of genuine fruit juice is relatively high.
- Should select a big-sized container because the amount of vitamin C in fruit juice will be more than that in a small container due to production process and packaging. Fruit juice in a small container will contact air; as a result, vitamin C can dissolve more easily than that in a big container.
- Should select fruit juice free of sugar, syrup, artificial color or any preservative.
- For fresh fruit juice sold by vendors or at the markets, it has not been pasteurized. If it has to be bought, one must be sure that the fruits and equipment are washed thoroughly before extracting the juice. The fruit juice must be chilled at all times.
Tip : Fresh fruit juice should be drunk immediately right after extracting. The leftover should be refrigerated less than three days at 2-4 ° C.

Drinking Vegetable and Fruit Juices Help Prevent Alzheimer
A medical expert who had studied the elderly people with alzheimer disease for 30 years suggested that drinking fruit and vegetable juices regularly may prevent alzheimer disease. Medical Doctor Amy Borenstein and the faculty of South Florida University had studied 1,800 American Japanese elders who drank fruit and vegetable juices daily for 30 days. The result showed that their memory capability could function four times better than that of those who drank less fruit and vegetable juices or did not drink them at all.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mark Saker, a researcher of Wisconsin University, and his team observed people whose parents were alzheimer and found one of the facts that might help predict who could become alzheimer was the amount of alcohol consumption. It was found that persons who drank a medium amount would have a less chance of getting this disease than those who drank heavily or did not drink at all. |
The American Society of Anti-alzheimer reckoned that about 4.5 million aged Americans were alzheimer . It is believed that the number of those who are mentally retarded worldwide is as high as 45 million and tends to enlarge more and more. Presently, there is no way of curing this disease so it would be wise to take a preventive measure.

Banana and Innovative Banana Products |
We all know Thai bananas well. But it is a question whether the advantages of bananas are learned. Presently, European people pay more attention to banana consumption; and the quantity of bananas eaten is larger than that of apples as it may be said that “A banana a day keeps the doctor away” instead of “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. Banana contains carbohydrate, fructose, glucose, and fructo-oligosaccharide, vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12, A and E, and very high potassium. As a consequence, banana is a rich source of minerals and vitamins which are extremely useful to a body. |
| Banana has amino acid, a natural substance, which is a vital factor for building a compound, acting as a neurotransmitter e.g. Dopamine, Serotinin, to regulate functions of body and emotion. In addition, banana contains very high typtophan and vitamin B6. Currently, the innovative banana products, arranged as a series of Banana Gallery, are a result of processing bananas not in a very high temperature. Consequently, nutritional values are not lost. The said products include banana juice, banana syrup, V-banana, banana wine, fermented banana wine and banana chili sauce.

Tea drinkers may be happy with a new research that Chamomile tea can prevent body from getting sick, including a flu and period ach. During the study, a researcher had tested urine of 14 healthy volunteers, drinking 5 cups of Chamomile tea every day for 2 weeks. It was found that drinking tea could form a compound in urine which helps body act against a flu. In addition, Glycine, helping relieve muscles, was also found in tea. |
This finding supports the hypothesis that tea can ease muscle pain during menstruation. After the volunteers stopped drinking tea, a high level of Glycine still remained the same for another 2 weeks. This research result indicated that drinking Chamomile tea could yield a long-term impact. Furthermore, a report of a researcher said that Chamomile was used as a medicine for curing rashes, neurosis, and infections. Also, Chamomile may be used as an anti-oxidation and anti-microbial. | Substance extracted from grape seeds having a higher capability in reducing free radical than that of vitamins C and E |
The grape seed and the grape peel contain high amount of felvonoid, called proanthocyananidin, when congregated in the form of oligomeric proanthocyanidin, or abbreviated as “OPC”, which is found in the barks of pine tree and lemon, grape seed, cranberry, orange peel, and tea. The substance extracted from grape seeds, “OPC”, has an anti-reaction to free radical better than that of vitamins C and E 50 and 20 times, respectively. It is used for curing the abnormality of vessels and capillaries, varicose veins, inflexibility of capillaries, the final stage of diabetes, and the deterioration of retina. In addition, OPC can protect and strengthen the strength of connective issue which forms the structure of skin, increase the flexibility of skin, and delay the ageing skin.
